Silver Pitcher and Lemon- Sold

 "Lemon with Tea?"
10"x 8" Oil on linen panel
sold

I have been painting although not posting much. There are several paintings that I just can't seem to feel satisfied with and haven't called them finished yet. This painting I completed yesterday in one sitting and I couldn't be happier with it. I spent more time on getting the photo of it right than it took to paint it! I'm digging the lost edge on the left and the silver pitcher emerging from the background.

A bit of good news!! Today I found out that I won first place in the Daily Paintworks Monthly Contest!! There were 86 other works entered some amazing art!! I'm so honored to have even been in the top 15 and to have won 1st place blew me away. It is a happy day indeed in this studio!! Below is the winning work which is in the collection of Dan and Freda Alexander.

Sunrise at Murrells Inlet Boat Ramp - Sold

"Early Light"
12"x 16"x 1/2"Oil on stretched canvas
Sold

I must have dreamed it but I know I wrote a post for this painting already! I've checked Daily Paintworks, Facebook, Small Paintings by Marilyn M King and Instagram. Nowhere! I remember what I wrote even but alas I begin again. I love social media and it gives me an opportunity to show my work in multiple places but sometimes the time spent handling the posts becomes lengthy. Just part of the job.
Sunrises over this favorite spot are usually breathtaking and images captured are great reference for me to practice and do numerous studies of land/sea/marsh scapes. I feel that this was successful enough to offer here, hope you like it!  I see many potential study and painting subjects near my new home, the area so rich in low country beauty.  I am definitely out of my comfort zone, but working it out.

Garlic Bulb and Cayenne Chile Pepper - Sold

"Hot Stuff"
6"x 8" Oil on Gessobord
sold

It is so satisfying to paint quickly, leave the brush strokes and complete a painting in one sitting. I'm still fighting my habit of focusing on detail and am tempted to blend the the paint too often, but learning a new way to see and apply paint is stimulating and gives new life to these studies.

Strawberries in Silver Bowl - Sold

"Impressional Strawberries"
6"x 8" Oil on linen panel
sold

This painting was painted alla prima in one sitting. Focus was on the larger shapes and colors and less on detail while painting my first impressions of my arrangement. Going forward for a while I plan on painting more impressionistic and enjoying the juicy paint and larger strokes. This is a stretch for me but I'm enjoying the ride so far!!! More to come.
( alla prima : Wet-on-wet. Direct painting is a painting technique in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously layers of wet paint. )

Atlantic Avenue in Garden City Beach, SC

"Garden City Fireworks"
10"x 8" Oil on Gessobord
$112.50
purchase here ebay
After painting and ditching several recent works I finally finished one suitable to post. I don't usually go through such a long string of false starts, so moving beyond that is so refreshing. This painting is of a small avenue my husband and I take several times a week to visit our local pier and walk on the beach. Often the clouds build up, may yield a short shower and then the bright sun bursts forth again. I've always been moved by the strong warm light casting warmth on the landscape with the gray clouds still remaining in the sky. Thankfully I think I captured that moment.

Figs on Antique Table - Sold

"Figs Spotlight"
10"x 20" Oil on linen wood panel
sold

I finished the figs today after the holidays and having a fresh eye, I decided to only put a glaze on the background and defined the front table edge a bit along with new photos. The first image shows good color representation but the cut figs appear a bit "posterized" so the detail shot shows the brush strokes a little better although not very clear. I spending way too much time trying to get satisfactory photos these days.
My Canon SureShot does a little better with detail, but my iphone surpasses the canon on true color. Maybe a new camera in 2019, suggestions welcomed. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and happy holidays!! 2019 almost here, lets paint!!!

Three Peaches on Blue Background - Sold

"Peaches in December"
6"x 8" Oil on Gessobord

That deep blue background makes the peaches pop and a perfect color for December.
Note that the photo is showing the foreground table edge darker than the original and there is a bit of black under the table side edge not apparent.

Wild Pears and Pottery- Sold

"For the Picking"
9"x 12" Oil on Gessobord
sold

I find myself looking for fruit trees and certain flowers everywhere I go. Once I find a fruit tree such as a peach, apple or pear I remember where it is and go to borrow leaves or maybe fruit sometimes.  Often I'll use store bought fruit with the leaves of a certain tree for that freshly harvested illusion. On this occasion I hit the jackpot as this pear tree was in front of an abandoned house and the fruit was there for the picking.

Murrells Inlet Sunset from Veteran's Pier- Sold

"Murrells Inlet Sunset at Veteran's Pier"
9"x 12" Oil on Gessobord
sold

I've been taking a break from blogging to do a few commissions but this painting was for my pleasure. I took a photo of this sunset a year ago and have looked forward to trying to capture it in paint. There is so much beauty in this coastal area of South Carolina, my new home for a year now, and I desire to expand my skills to more landscape and seascape paintings.
The view here is looking back at Marsh Walk from The Veteran's Pier where many great seafood restaurants are enjoyed by locals and visitors year round.

Sunny Day Roses

"Sunny Day Roses"
6"x 8" oil on Gessobord

$99 + S&H
at marilynmking@yahoo.com

It was a good day in the studio and it started my week off with great expectations. I’m developing a passion for floral art as a result of studying other great paintings and also as a result of my last commission. As I’m being influenced by the gorgeous, loose and painterly styles that I so admire in other artists’ work, I’m moving away from my very precise still life paintings for a while. It is so freeing and so much fun!!! I think my favorite part of this little piece is the blue bits on the petals reflecting the sky. What marvelous color in God’s creation!!! Please enlarge and enjoy the luscious brush strokes of pure color!!!

I’m including some progression shots for those interested.

Engish Roses study - SOLD

"English Roses" study
6"x 8" oil on linen mounted wood panel

sold

Trying to loosen up in preparation for more floral still lifes. "Loose" painting is not my comfort zone and I worked past the really loose stage but it is a good start. Several years ago when I first began painting in oils I was so inspired by the loose style I saw many artists achieving and really worked at trying to accomplish a loose style of my own. As I finally got to a degree of acceptable brushwork and pleasant styling, I got interrupted by life and didn't paint for a while. Once my painting resumed I just jumped back in to what I felt comfortable with and began the trend to more and more realistic. That has worked fine and well received by collectors but as I am beginning to explore painting flowers I feel the need to back off from the very tight style that has been my norm. We will see how far I loosen up but I liked this start.....
( Ha, a true loosened up painter would have left off those dew drops, a bit of tight detail, lol )

Strawberries and Silver Creamer Encore - SOLD

"Strawberries Encore"
6"x 8" oil on Gessobord
sold

This painting was commissioned by a collector who missed out on purchasing the previous 5x7 painting of the same image. I changed the size ratios of the objects to make a better composition for the new size of 6x8. I was especially happy to paint this one again, one of my favorite images. Several other previous works have been reproduce by request and each have improved a bit, it's a good practice!

Strawberries with Silver Goblet - SOLD

"Strawberries and Silver Goblet"

8"x 10" Oil on Gessobord
sold

This painting was done in the midst of my strawberry focus a few paintings back. I couldn't decide if I would leave the background edges "unfinished" or not. After looking at it a few weeks I think I like it as it gives the back space a little interest and also adds to the antique old world vibe. It's a bit French Country, don't you think?

Strawberries and Blue Bowl --SOLD

"Strawberries and Blue Bowl"
6"x 6" Oil on Gessobord

More strawberries before I move on to something other than fruit in my next painting. This colorful one will hang in the home of one of my dear collectors. Thanks Gail!

Red Grapes on Silver Pedestal Plate — SOLD

"Red Grapes on Display"
6"x 8"x 1/8" Oil on Gessobord
SOLD

I’ve been watching some art videos lately and was inspired to approach this still life a bit differently. I premixed my paint for the most part rather than mix as I go along and I blocked in color all over the canvas before finishing any one area. I’ll continue this my next painting—seems to keep my colors cleaner and see my all important values better.
