Today I worked all over the painting, deepening the background color, adding detail to the shelf on wall and items on the table, and painting the reflexions on the wood. I am still waiting to paint the flowers until I'm sure that the background is the value that feels right.

After a week of multiple family crises and heavy work week, I'm finally back at the easel. Hospitals and funerals put me in the mood to paint flowers and this afternoon I began this 14"x11" oil painting. What attracted me to the still life I captured by camera yesterday, was the soft quality of the indirect light from the nearby window. The most striking beauty of the light is how it filters through the white petals of the flowers. I'll be painting them in near the end, after all other values are established. Posted here is the initial drawing and the blocking in of the base colors. At this stage, getting the values right is more important than getting the colors accurate.

Today I thought I'd do a quick painting - one of those small 6"x6" studies. But I ended up making a more time consuming realistic painting of this favorite item.

I've spent my artistic time today taking some shots of recent work done from my travel photos. The first painting (9"x12"- o/c) is of a quaint private patio along the streets of beautiful Santorini, Greece. It was a cloudy day, but the color was still bright and cheery everywhere you looked. I'd love to serve guests breakfast at this table! The next piece (7"x10"- o/c) is a view from my hotel balcony in Stresa, Italy. This is the northern lakes area of the country that must be visited! It's amazing that you can see the Alps in the near distance and still have palm trees everywhere. Another of the lakes in the area is the well known Lake Como, shown in the next painting (7"x9"-o/c).

This painting done today on Valentine's Day is appropriate because I love clementines! Did you know that clementines are mandarine oranges?

Pam's Pears

While at Pam's I spotted her pears in the kitchen and brought them to a much more deserving setting. The cool light from the cloudy day outside lay across her mahogany table and created interesting and colorful reflections I just had to paint!
